Online Scammers Target Tax Payers

Tax scams come around at this time every year through your e-mail and with just the click of a mouse, scammers can take away thousands of dollars out of your bank account.

Ways to spot a tax scam email:

  • asks for detailed personal information, such as name, SSN, bank or credit card numbers, mother's maiden name, etc.
  • tries to lure you into responding by mentioning a tax refund or offering to pay you to participate in an IRS survey
  • threatens dire consequences if you do not respond to the email, such as additional taxes or blocking your refund
  • uses incorrect grammar or odd phrasing
  • uses a really long address in any lin contained in the email. Using Microsoft Outlook, you can hover your mouse over the link to reveal the actual web link address.
