Recent scams: traffic tickets, online auto sales, mystery shoppers, and modeling

Published October 18, 2011

The FBI has issued a scam alert for October describing some "new twists" on old scams.

Fake traffic tickets: Victims receive emails containing malicious software claiming they have been issued a traffic ticket by the New York State Police.

Double-dipping by online auto sales fraudsters: After sending a wire transfer for the purchase of a vehicle overseas, the buyer is told the transfer didn't go through. The thief sends the buyer a fake cashier's check, and tells them to cash the check and send the money again. The check is, of course, phony.

Kelley Blue Book scam: Another online vehicle purchase scam, this one claiming to be from an agent of Kelley Blue Book who says the transfer must go through their "buyer protection plan." Kelley Blue Book does not offer such a plan.

Radio ads for phony mystery shoppers: The twist in these ads is the position they are trying to fill - persons to evaluate the speed and efficiency of money transfers. This is another fraud involving fake checks and money transfers.
